Order Process: What Happens When Customers Place Orders?

order confirmation notification

  1. Order Placed: A customer places an order in your Brikl store, paying the retail price you’ve set.
  2. Order Routed to Decorator: Brikl automatically sends the order to a nearby decorator based on the required decoration technique and the customer's location.
  3. Order Fulfilled and Delivered: The decorator fulfills the order and ships it directly to the customer. They will receive notifications when their item is shipped and delivered.

How Payouts Are Calculated

We calculate your payout, or the amount received, by subtracting the cost of goods, the shipping fee, and the Brikl fee from the retail price.

Here’s a breakdown of each element:

- Order total: The price paid by the customer including shipping, excluding taxes.

- Cost of Goods: The all-in cost of the product, including any decorations.

- Shipping Fee: The decorator’s charge for shipping the product.

- Brikl Fee: A 3.5% commission on the order total, excluding tax.

Payout Calculation Example

If you sell a polo shirt for $50 with a 50% markup, your cost of goods (COGS) would be $25. Adding shipping brings the retail price to $59.50. Brikl’s 3.5% fee on the retail price results in $2.08.

When coupons are applied, the payout adjusts based on the discounted retail price, while the Brikl fee remains calculated on the pre-discount price.

Put simply, we’d collect $59.50 (plus sales tax) from the customer. After subtracting the COGS and the Brikl fee, your net profit for this transaction would be $22.90.

When coupons are applied, the payout will be adjusted to cover the cost of goods sold, with the Brikl fee calculated based on the retail price, excluding the coupon discount.

Pricing Strategy Best Practices

Markup vs. Margin

In Brikl’s system, markup is used (percentage of cost) rather than margin (percentage of sales). Markup helps you achieve a profitable retail price. For example, a 50% margin corresponds to a 100% markup on cost.

We set a default 50% markup to ensure basic profitability, though you can adjust this percentage. It’s important to set a markup that covers any additional costs, especially if you decide to charge customers less than the decorator’s shipping fee.

For simplicity, here’s a visual formula for calculating payout:

Decorator Shipping Fee

Brikl applies a set decorator shipping fee of $9.50 plus an additional dollar for faster fulfillment. Printful products, however, use live rates that vary based on the item type, origin, and destination. These rates are often more competitive and cannot be overridden by the merchant.
