Guide
How Brikl supports tax-exempt organizations — non-profits, schools, government entities, and wholesale accounts — so eligible orders are processed without sales tax while keeping a clean, audit-ready transaction history.
Tax-exempt setup is available for organizations and accounts that hold a valid exemption in the jurisdictions where they sell. Eligibility depends on your jurisdiction and on holding valid supporting documentation.
For example, 501(c)(3) entities in the US.
Public schools, universities, and government agencies.
A non-profit's branded merchandise or fundraising store where proceeds support the organization.
Accounts that buy for resale rather than end use, with a valid resale certificate.
Brikl uses a real-time sales tax engine to calculate and document tax on every order. For an exempt store, we configure the exemption at the store level:
Your store is registered as an exempt account in the tax engine with the correct exemption type — non-profit, government, or wholesale/resale.
We set the states or regions where the exemption applies, matching your documentation exactly.
The tax engine recognizes the store as exempt and applies the exemption automatically. Eligible orders show $0 sales tax.
Audit trail built in.Tax is still calculated and each transaction is still registered with the tax engine. The exemption is applied on top — so rather than exempt sales disappearing, your records show what would have been taxable and confirm it was correctly exempted.
You control your own tax configuration. Brikl provides the store and the tax-engine integration; exemption setup, collection, and filings are handled under your own tax accounts and processes.
Note:This covers sales tax only. It does not replace your organization's own obligations — such as income tax, non-profit information returns, or annual filings tied to your tax-exempt status. Those remain the responsibility of your organization.
Exemptions must be supported by valid documentation. An expired certificate can invalidate the exemption, after which orders may become taxable again.
Some exemptions apply only in specific states or countries, while others apply broadly. We configure your store to match your documentation.
Tax-exemption rules are specific to each organization and jurisdiction. We recommend confirming your status and obligations with a qualified tax advisor.
Reach out with your entity details and exemption documentation, and we'll configure your store. We confirm the exemption type and regions with you before going live.
